Where to live near LDS Business College?
Hey: My sister-in-law is moving to Salt Lake to go to LDS Business College. I know a bunch of ya’ll live around there. She just got off her mission (to Utah, but Provo) and is looking for a place to live. We live in Texas, and I’ve never lived in Utah (except the MTC) anyone have any ideas of someplace safe (and really cheap) we can afford to put my sister-in-law up in?
I know this is atypical for the blog, but this girl is pretty important to me.
The southern part of Davis County (Bountiful, Woods Cross, North Salt Lake) is a nice area where rents are generally less than in Salt Lake County. Fifteen minute drive under non-rush hour conditions.

As Mark D. says, she wants to head North. The further north you go, the cheaper it gets.

The problem is that unless you are moving to the southern part of North Salt Lake the commute is going to put you on the freeway and I-15 is a mess every single afternoon going north to Davis county.
Note that commuter rail is about to start running in a month of two and it will run all the way to the north end of Weber county. That might make anyplace near the commuter rail an attractive option. Trax is another option, but my experience is that Trax is really fast until about 21st South, and then it takes forever to get downtown from there.

THE LOWER AVENUES. LDSBC used to be there itself but I think they’ve moved to a new location. all the same, the area is closer than any of the areas mentioned. it’s generally inexpensive, within walking & biking distance to everything downtown, and near stops for several buslines.
the nicest thing is that the lower avenues area is a great neighborhood community. I lived there for several years and found the wards to be wonderful, diverse and basically free of the “Melrose Church” rat-race mentality. there are a lot of rentals to choose from and the people are pretty friendly and varied. there’s a lot I miss about the place; I could go on…

I thought of suggesting the lower avenues, too, because of the walking distance thing. It’s where I live. But when I called around to a few people I know who have vacancies in their buildings, the cheapest thing I could find was a basement for $500. I didn’t think that qualified as “student cheap.”

My wife used to live in a complex called “Cambridge Courts” or something like that and really enjoyed it. It was pretty spacious and reasonably cheap. It was at about 1300 N and Redwood.
Also, you could try to get a student in SLC to check the UofU institute where they post roomate vacancies.

I’m going to throw my hat in the “lower Avenues” ring, too. I lived there when I went to LD and the U. of U., and I found it to be most agreeable in proximity to everything (saves on car wear n’ tear and gas), it’s a beautiful neighborhood and I always seemed to find cheap living (I stayed in three places while there). Salt Lake has a Craig’s List with an Apt. section, and there’s a site called backpage.com that also lists roommates and apts. Also check out cwlistings.com which is the online version of a local SL classifieds paper.

Has she thought about the Plaza. PRI has provided four floors of the Plaza Hotel for female students of LDS Business College.

Wonderful blog! I found it while browsing on Yahoo News.
Do you have any suggestions on how to get listed in Yahoo News?
I’ve been trying for a while but I never seem to get there! Thanks
